exhibition, “Uncommon Beauty
in Common Objects: The Lega-
cy of African American Craft
Art,” organized by the National
Afro-American Museum and
Cultural Center in Wilberforce,
Ohio. It opened in October
1993, toured through June 1995,
and featured 120 objects by 107
African American artists.
Here in 2011, the African
American craft field is still ben-
efitting from the impact and
influence of this historic event.
The absence of “Uncommon
Beauty in Common Objects” in
your timeline is a miscarriage of
craft justice.

creation is a troubling trend,
not just in artistic endeavors.
